Project: Apple wanted to dramatically update its PowerBook line with the introduction of the PowerBook G3. One of the key areas in which Apple wanted to distinguish this PowerBook was its keyboard. At this time, Apple’s portable keyboards were out-of-date, had poor feel, and had limited functionality.
Method: I first conducted a comparative usability study of competitor’s portable keyboards. I collected data on users’ perceptions of feel and fatigue, users’ performance, the usability of embedded functions, and the usability of the key layout. The results provided us with very specific design directions for how we wanted to design the G3’s keyboard. The keyboard on the shipping product received rave reviews.
